Here it is July and my list keeps growing bigger on what I am suppose to get done…how does that happen?
Busy working on my book…haven’t decided on a title but will soon send you several ideas so you can help me make a decision. I always look forward to your input.
Also working on reworking my website…it is going to be exciting so be on the look-out for the new look.
Submitting to a Gallery
Time to answer another great art question – this one is from Maggie.
Her question is “What steps does one take to get into a gallery?”
Great question and one I get all the time. There are certainly some definite steps and some that are not so definite.
Develop a style that is yours. Don’t show a gallery how you do landscapes, flowers and abstracts….it won’t work. A gallery needs to know you have a “style”. Another way to put it is…you have discovered your “unique voice”. This tells the gallery you are a seasoned artist as it takes a time and persistence to discover this voice of yours.
Find the gallery or galleries that you would like to submit your work. If possible visit them and see how you are greeted and how the staff talks about the paintings that are in the gallery. They also need to know all about the artists.
If you can’t visit the gallery go to their website and check out the artists, the work that is represented and the price range. This will give you a good idea if your work would fit.
When you decide if you are a fit check on their website to see how they accept new artists. Usually they will give you clear instructions on how to apply. Follow their instructions exactly.
If you are able to visit the gallery you can ask if they are open to new artists and if so how would they like the work to be presented. If you are lucky and they would like to see your work that you just happen to have in the car you can show your work on the spot. This doesn’t happen often but always give it a try.
If you submit your paintings via CD, DVD or whatever they request be sure and call the gallery and ask if they received your package. Ask when would be a good time to check back with them about your work. I realize this is scary but remember this is a business and you are now a business person. This is a normal and professional question.
You may get answers about your work such as…
We are not accepting new artists at this time. This is when you ask when would be a good time to resubmit.
Your work is good but not a fit for our gallery. Send them a thank you for taking the time to look at your work. Never burn any bridges as you may be in that gallery one day.
Or…you may hear nothing! I know it is disappointing but don’t take it personally …they say “nothing” all the time.
One last thing…don’t submit to just one gallery. Submit to several …test the waters.
The key here is to keep trying….never give up as there is a gallery out there waiting for your fabulous artwork.
Let’s face it…rejection sucks. Approaching a gallery takes guts but think of it this way…your work is good and now it is your job to find a place where more people can enjoy and purchase your creative efforts.
