I just got back from Tucson, AZ where the desert is filled with exquisite color from all the cactus in bloom. Tucson got more rain than usual this year so the desert floor is abundant with Spring.
I will be announcing an upcoming on-line workshop soon so be on the lookout. It is going to be a great chance to deepen your creative process in the comfort of your home.
When Stealing is Good
Ever wonder how one of your best paintings was born? Where did your ideas come from to create this beautiful piece of work?
Writers collect words and artists collect ideas.
You decide what ideas you let into your life and since nothing is completely original your creative work is built on what came before.
You have studied the Masters, taken workshops from some great teachers, learned from your artist friends plus consumed many art books.
From all this you have found ideas that excite you and you have taken them and put them in your collection of ideas to remember.
In other words…you are stealing what is meaningful to you. We all steal but knowing it is legit allows us to do it without guilt.
David Bowie was once asked by a reporter…Are you original? David answered, “No, no, I am more like a tasteful thief. The only artists I study are the artists I can steal from”.
But remember…. taking an idea from another artist and imitating them is not flattery.
Flattery is when you take the idea you have stolen, tweak it and create it into your own personal artistic voice.
