Thumbnail sketches are vital to your overall planning and painting. It gives you a chance to let your mind roam free to envision anything. Whatever you are thinking of, draw it. You may come back to it at a later date or draw something so spectacular, you need to jump into the studio right away. Whatever it may be, thumbnail sketches are very important for any artist. I explain my thumbnail sketch process in this video.
