welcome to part 2 of my abstract painting series. In part 1 I left you with a question: what do you do when you have the perfect composition, you know exactly what you’re doing, and it still doesn’t work out?
Here’s one of the things that could have gone wrong, and how to fix it. I pull out a painting that didn’t work, and I’ll tell you why: I wanted to be in control, so I didn’t listen to what it was telling me. We talk about what “letting go” really means (it’s not just doing anything), why listening is a form of visual awareness, and what to do when you hit the messy middle.
Then I take you through the moment I was totally lost, asked the one question that changed everything, and did something I had never done before: I put black on a painting.
I also share how I fell into abstract painting through the back door, after a group of artist friends told me I was not welcome to paint ballerinas with them.
